Thickened Toenails (Onychogryphosis or Onychauxis)

The nail (usually on the big toes) becomes thickened and very hard  If neglected the nail can become very difficult to cut and can occasionally grow at an angle towards the next toe. In most cases the problem has been caused by a past trauma or accident and is irreversible even if the nail is removed and a new one grows in its place. Fungal infections and psoriasis can also lead to thickening of the nail. Cut the nail using nippers or reduce the thickness of the nail using a file. The ProLyne glass nail file is particularly effective and safe for self treatment.
