Morton’s Neuroma (Mortons toe)Morton's Neuroma is a painful condition on the ball of the foot between the third and fourth metatarsal heads. A sharp pain in the fourth toe is often felt and this is caused by swelling on the nerve. Occasionally symptons can include a lack of feeling in the affected area. Morton's Neuroma is usually caused by pressure on the nerve between the third and fourth metatarsal heads. Tight footwear especially high heeled pointed toe shoes can often be a major cause. Treatment includes soft padding and rest and when necessary shoe inserts or orthotics. Correctly fitted lace up footwear giving adequate width in the toe box is advised. Prolyne Technogel metatarsal gel cushions can be particularly useful in treating this condition. Chiropody felt can be helpful in giving temporary relief from pain. In extreme cases surgery may be necessary.
