Heel Spurs
A heel spur is an abnormal projection of heel bone which produces pain under the heel. Bony deposits form when the plantar fascia tears from the heel bone (calcaneum). The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue stretching from behind the metatarsal heads to the heel.Heel spurs are often caused by over pronation but can also be present in people with high arches. If over pronation is the cause of the heel spur orthotics are indicated. The condition can also be treated symptomatically using heel pads or heel cups to reduce pain and inflammation. If a high arch is present a silicone valgus pad can be beneficial.
