Diabetes
Foot problems for those with diabetes should always be treated seriously and self-treatment should always be under the supervision of a Podiatrist (Chiropodist). General foot care and hygiene is essential.
Inspect feet daily.Check for cuts, blister, redness, swelling or nail problems.
Wash your feet in lukewarm water (not hot)! Be gentle when bathing your feet using a soft flannel or sponge.Dry by blotting or patting and make sure to carefully dry between the toes.
Moisturise the feet daily
Cut nails carefully straight across.File the edges.Do not cut too short
Never trim corns or callouses.
Avoid socks with tight tops.Do not wear thick or bulky socks.Wash socks/hosiery daily
Wear loose socks in bed if feet are cold.Do not use a hot water bottle
Always wear correctly fitted footwear and if possible lace-ups with a roomy toe box.
Seek professional advice from a podiatrist if you experience a foot problem, particularly if you have circulatory problems or diabetic neuropathy (reduced sensory feeling or numbness).
Most of our foot care products are suitable for use by diabetics to alleviate pressure and friction from footwear. Shoe inserts, insoles and orthotics are all suitable for use by diabetics.
