Bunions (Hallux Valgus)
A lump or protrusion found on the side or top of the joint of the large toe which can be red and swollen and is often painful. The large toe can often be deflected (pointing) towards the outside of the foot. The lump is usually caused by an additional growth (exostosis) of bone or an enlargement of the joint with or without an overlying sac of fluid (bursa). The swelling is often tender and inflamed.
