Bunions (Hallux Valgus)A lump or protrusion found on the side or top of the joint of the large toe which can be red and swollen and is often painful. The large toe can often be deflected (pointing) towards the outside of the foot. The lump is usually caused by an additional growth (exostosis) of bone or an enlargement of the joint with or without an overlying sac of fluid (bursa). The swelling is often tender and inflamed. Bunions are often genetic but can also be caused by tight shoes, particularly during childhood. Various devices are available to protect bunion joints from the pressure of shoes but it is essential to choose footwear that has adequate width and depth in the toe box. Shoes with laces or buckles would be more supportive and help to prevent the condition worsening. Chiropody felt, bunion pads and Prolyne Technogel pressure pads are all useful in the prevention of pressure on the bunion from shoes. If pain from the joint persists, a surgical opinion should be sought.
