Achilles Tendonitis (Inflamed achilles tendon)The Achilles tendon is a band of tissue connecting the lower part of the calf muscle to the heel bone (calcaneum). During walking the tendon helps to raise the heel off the ground. An inflammation of the tendon (Achilles Tendonitis) is usually short-lived but can be quite painful. In addition to pain, aching, stiffness or tenderness can be experienced within the tendon. The pain is often worse first thing in the morning or after periods of rest. Causes are very often due to over-use or sudden increase in use such as sporting activities. Treatment is based on how long the injury has been present. For early stages where there is sudden (acute) inflammation, immobilisation and ice should be applied for about 20 minutes. For longer term treatment, padding under the heel, heel cups or shoe inserts may be used. The wearing of supportive footwear such as lace up shoes or trainers, is desirable.
